Mark Kmit studied Organ, Classical guitar, and Flute at Cuyahoga Community College before transferring to Cleveland State University where he studied Music Theory and Composition.
From 1979-87 he performed with local original groups Prelude and Youth In Asia. He was also a member of Orb, where he collaborated with future New Age solo artist Mark Dwane. In 1987 he became musical director for the performance art group The Subliminals before embarking on solo electronic music and performance art pieces.
In 1990 in collaboration with mime artist Stephen Chipps, they created the Ground Zero Mime and Movement Theatre Company, where he was both music director and performer. From 1992-93 he attended the Goldston Johnson School for Mimes and also studied with Marcel Marceau at Kenyon College. In 1999 he began his association with Sarah Morrison’s MorrisonDance Modern Dance Company as a dancer.
In 2001 his career took another turn when he began touring with the Russian folk music trio, Moscow Nights, performing on the Bass Balalaika. He also completed and released his first album, “Umilenye,” that same year.
He has been on the staff of Broadway School of Music and The Arts since 1996, and has taught in the Cleveland Municipal School District, the Beck Center for The Arts, Memphis-Ridge Music Center, and the Family Learning Center for Music.
He also continues to compose and takes on a limited amount of private students.
